The N8 was packed in a slimline bright Blue Box which had the phone’s outline upfront(see pic above), at the back it had general description about the device. One side had the WLAN MAC address and IMEI no. and other side has Nokia N8 written in shiny Blue letters

Opening the Box one gets to see the N8 residing inside, recessed.

The back of the device is as beautiful as the front, but we will have the hardware review of the device in more detail in a separate post in a few days.

The Box also has a Nokia Micro USB Cable, The In-Ear Nokia headphones with a remote (a feature that is missing with all other manufacturers), The 2mm charger, and the USB on the Go cable for reading pendrives, other phone and also plugging usb keyboards etc. Also there is the HDMI output cable

to which i promptly replied and a Shinny Dark Grey Nokia N8 was a guest with me for 15 days. I shall be sharing my views on the device over the next few days with more post following on same.

C1

Its a low end dual sim device that will retail around 1800INR(30 Euros) when it becomes available in third quarter of 2010.  Also C1 has standby battery time of up to six weeks, the longest ever for a Nokia mobile phone, especially useful in those parts of the world where access to electricity is sometimes limited. The standard flashlight – often someone’s only means of bright light – is paired with a vivid color screen and FM radio with standard headphone jack, meaning the Nokia C1 is as much about entertainment as it is about convenience. The only low here is that this device is not dual standby ie only one sim will be active at one time. Here are some pictures of the device

C2

The C2 can be considered to be pimped up version of the C1. It can keep both SIM cards active; meaning calls and text messages can come to either number while the phone is on. The first SIM card on the Nokia C2 sits underneath the battery. The second SIM card is ‘hot-swappable’, a feature unique to Nokia, meaning it can be removed and inserted when the phone is on. At launch the Nokia C2 also offers a wide range of information covering healthcare, agriculture, education and entertainment via Nokia’s Ovi Life Tools, as well as the email account for the developing world, Ovi Mail. In addition to Ovi Mail, people’s favorite consumer email and chat accounts can be pushed direct to the phone via Nokia Messaging. Listening to music is simple with the FM radio and music player, with a massive amount of music storage with the phone supporting micro-SD cards of up to 32GB. A VGA camera, Bluetooth and GPRS also make the Nokia C2 a very attractive offering.The device is expected to retail towards the end of the fourth quarter 2010 at about 2600INR(45 Euros). C1-01 & C1-02

These are single sim low end devices but with some thoroughly modern features. Colour screens, web browsing, a music player, Bluetooth, GPRS and email

The C1-01 is a low-cost ‘feature’ phone with an estimated retail price of 2300INR (EUR 39). Nonetheless, it comes with a VGA camera, an SD memory card slot for up to 32 GB of storage, mail and chat. There’s also an FM radio and music player.

The C1-02 is even more affordable, with an expected retail price of 2000INR(EUR 35). It’s designed as anyone’s first phone and first access to the world of mobile and digital communications. Despite the price, beyond making phone calls, buyers once again get Ovi Mail and Chat, Bluetooth and the same SD memory card slot and music features.

Back in May 2007 when i became a proud owner of the Nokia N95 it was the best mobile phone that the market had. It beat it rivals by miles and no other phone could come near it in term of features. It had all what one could imagine. It had the following list of features that were till then unseen in any mobile device:

• The first mobile phone that had a 5 Megapixel Camera that was a very  good performer
• The first mobile phone that had 3.5G to be commercially launched, means it could do 3.5Mbps even in 2007, Wi-Fi, UPnP
• The first mobile phone that had a built in GPS receiver.
• Ability to render a desktop alike browsing experience(in 2007), with flash support
• The cool dual way slide form factor
• The in built accelerometer
• The first phone to support N-Gage
• Full set of media software, with all audio and video codecs, video and image editing suites, online integration
• TV out for video echoing of any application or media item to a TV or other video equipment
• Large 2.6 inch screen
• Facility to work in portrait or landscape mode

Back in 2007 it was a very impressive feature set and had left the competition gasping. The N95 was at the epitome of convergence. Nokia had done what no other mobile manufacturer at time could even imagine. It was mile ahead of the rest. But this also led to loads and loads of expectations from Nokia with each of their impending releases. The next in line flagships from Nokia were not even remotely as path breaking products as the N95.

The next in line were the N95-8GB, which was essentially the same phone but with 8gig on memory on board, bigger screen and battery, but nothing much to add to the feature list apart from these upgrades.

Then came the N96, it had even bigger onboard memory at 16gigs and the ability to add more via a Micro-SD card. This one even had DVBH support in built, and a newer version of the Symbian 60 OS, but apart from these it was similar to N95

Then came the N97, much hyped and anticipated. It had a 3.5″ full touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard and 32gigs of on board memory, but apart from these it had all that n95 had way back in 2007.

Nokia with these phones seems to have fallen behind the competition. The competition has better camera phones at 12 Megapixels, Xenon flash and the ability to record HD video. They competition also supports faster versions of HSDPA 3G network while Nokia is still stuck at 3.6Mbps, the one that N95 had two years ago. On the software front also the Symbian OS has not evolved as much and is felling the heat of competition from Apple and Android OS. Even Nokia has announced the N900 with Maemo(Linux based) OS.

Nokia which once was at the pinnacle of making the best mobile device which had the best convergence features in the shape of N95 has now fallen way behind others. The legacy of N95 has come to haunt Nokia as all of their devices will be compared to N95 for their ability to add new features and make the mobile a better convergence device.

Ovi store like the App Store should be a source to find apps and other stuff easily and without much fuss, but it seems nokia has missed the point, even though i am a self confessed nokia fan but i still can not ignore the sorry state of afairs of the Ovi Store cleint. It has massive flaws which ought to be corrected soon.. real soon.
The store is far to slow to load on even a wifi connection leave aside the million out there nokia is targeting with its s40 handsets who are on EDGE or even GPRS.
The search functionality is pathetic and does find the right app even though its available

I find googling for an app much much more easier than using the ovi store and that just beats the whole idea behind opening one…

Nokia act up fast… this is the biggest blunder i think u have committed so far with ovi …

Mobile Number Portability is all set come by the year’s end. An article in The Times Of India today said so. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented from December 31 in metros and category ‘A’ service areas, and by 20th March, 2010, in rest of the country, telecom regulator TRAI said on Wednesday.

The MNP facility will enable subscribers to retain their cell phone numbers even after changing service providers.

The government earlier this month had said implementation of MNP would be delayed by three months as regulations were still being made. Issuing “Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009″, TRAI said the MNP facility shall be available only within a given licensed service area.

A subscriber holding a mobile number is eligible to make a porting request only after 90 days of the date of activation of his mobile connection. If a number is already ported once, the number can again be ported only after 90 days from the date of the previous porting. The cost to the subscriber seeking the porting is yet to be decided by TRAI.

The subscriber who wishes to port his mobile number should approach the recipient operator(the operator to whom the subscriber wants to port his number). The subscriber may be required to pay porting charges, if any, to the recipient operator.
Also, the subscriber must clear all the bills issued prior to the date of porting request.

I do not think in any sane persons mind would my comment violate any of the store’s content guidelines. I have also shot a mail to them asking for elaborate explanation for deletion of comment.

Even though Comment Moderation is must for any good site to prevent spam but this kind of moderation kills the whole purpose of allowing users to comment about any application or other stuff.
I shall update the post as soon as i get any reply from Ovi Store.

Since i had been away from my blog for a long long time i would like to both apologise and thank you.
Apologise for being away from my blog for such a long time without any intimation and Thank You all for reading my blog even though i had not posted any thing recent on my blog.

This long haitus from bloging was not neither intentional nor planned but was the result of change of my location and job responseabilities. Adapting to a new location consumed a lot of my time.

The new scenario means that i shall be having a lot less time with my computer and hence shall be posting a lot of my posts like this one from my cellphone using wordmobi. I shall be at your service providing you with the latest news about cellphones, applications and reviews and rants.
